Total Time 40 minutes
Servings: 6 bars

Ingredients

  • 1 cup virgin coconut oil (solid)
  • ¾ cup extra virgin olive oil
  • ¼ cup unrefined shea butter
  • ¼ cup pure castor oil
  • 3.6 oz sodium hydroxide (lye beads)
  • 9 oz distilled water
  • 20 drops pure lavender essential oil

Method

  1. Put on safety goggles and heat-resistant rubber gloves in a well-ventilated work area.
  2. Measure distilled water into a pitcher, slowly stir lye beads into water until dissolved, and cool to 100°F (38°C).
  3. Melt coconut oil and shea butter over low heat, then stir in olive oil and castor oil until combined at 100°F (38°C).
  4. Slowly pour lye solution into the melted oils, stirring gently with an immersion blender spatula.
  5. Pulse immersion blender in short bursts until mixture reaches a light trace resembling thin pudding.
  6. Stir in essential oils, pour batter into silicone bar molds, and tap molds on counter to release bubbles.
  7. Cover molds, let set forty-eight hours until solid, then unmold and cure on a rack for four weeks.

Notes

Always pour lye crystals into water and never water into lye to prevent dangerous boiling splashing.
